The word “intimate” comes to mind because these songs are that. With very pretty new musical elements added to freshen these old tracks up, they sound like Elvis just stepped out of the recording booth. Even though a lot of Elvis’s female fans will be especially attracted to these romantic songs, I suspect a lot of men will too, because the emotions conveyed are universal. There are big hits represented here that sound better than ever before with the new treatments, (they really come alive!) but I also enjoyed some lesser-known songs that had been buried in albums. This CD contains some of Elvis’s finest vocal performances, without a doubt. A real treasure. On each song, just the right new musical addition has been made — be it strings, horns, guitars, percussion — to fill gaps on the originals that I never realized were there until I went back and listened to how some of these songs sounded when first released. On “The Tender Side of Elvis,” the songs now seem complete. This was obviously very carefully thought through and hence enhances rather than detracts from EP’s performances. Unlike some of the RPO overdubs, Elvis’s voice here is never covered up. The new sounds are so well integrated, it’s sometimes hard to tell what has been added, except you just sense that these new versions are amazingly better — truly “new and improved”! The truth is some of the recordings Elvis made (such as for movies) were slapped together rather haphazardly by the producers (no reflection on Elvis himself) and they didn’t seem to care what they sounded like because, after all, it was Elvis Presley and it would sell. Now these songs have been treated the way they should have been to begin with, including having grating background singing or instruments removed and replaced with better music. got it right. They really did a great job with
revamping his music. It gives a whole different
perspective and dynamic range to the songs,
while preserving what was good about the
originals. I think if Elvis was here today he

anyone who loves Elvis to buy this cd. You won't

"There's Always Me" has a gorgeous
string section. "Forget Me Never" has a
bluegrass feel with steel, dobro, etc.
"True Love" has sweeping glissandos that
make the song sparkle (and they
lengthened it). "Where Do You Come From"
has pretty strings. "I Will Be Home
Again" has Elvis singing with his ex
Army buddy Charlie Hodge and beautiful
guitar work has been added. "Anything
That's Part Of You" has an underlying
piano that sets the mood (very Nashville
Sound) with beautiful string
arrangement. "Can't Help Falling In
Love" has never sounded better. "Love Me
Tender" has a wonderful female singer
(Cassie West) singing with Elvis (and
btw, it's better than any previous
versions). Simply superb.

Elvis, this CD is special. I am so happy
that I was listening to Elvis Express
Radio. They played 3 songs and I knew I
had to buy this CD!!! I went to Amazon and
looked the CD up and there it was but it
wasn't for sale yet. So I purchased from
Good Music Store and received my order in
a couple of days. I sat down and put the
CD and wondered if the entire CD would be
as good as the 3 songs played on EER, and
I have to say it IS! To listen to Elvis
with his voice now so clear, and with the
orchestra music in the back ground, is
just a wonderful experience. Whoever is

I also appreciated what they did with "We'll Be Together." On the original, some awful group called "The Amigos" sand so loudly they covered Elvis up in places. But they have been scaled back and now we hear him sing some lyrics in Spanish (and of course English). These remixes/reorchestrations have revealed Elvis's voice in places we never heard before and proven that some of the original arrangements really sucked, to put it politely. The new versions are much improved! |
