WOW, what a great CD!
Jim's voice has never sounded better, with the new
music backing his great voice. There is a wonderful
diversified blend of songs - from pop to country.
Although I personally prefer having Jim do country ballads, he can do any type of music with ease. I wrote him one time that I didn't like him going "pop" like he was doing on his daytime radio show. Jim wrote me back that he too preferred country but it simply wasn't selling. He said "If one crop doesn't grow, you plant another". He also said "I hope we will still be friends whether I'm singing opera or opry, ok?" Needless to say, I forgave him! You will find yourself singing along and playing some songs over and over again! This collection of songs is a masterpiece, pure and simple. It is irrefutable that you can clearly hear Jim better on this release than you can on the originals, (his voice is never overpowered by the new accompaniment), and you will gain even greater appreciation for his immense talent when you listen. And each note is played with the same exacting skill as Jim himself would have demanded. Every element fits together seamlessly, and the result is one of the best Jim Reeves albums to ever be released anywhere and at any time.

Incredible what they can do these days to make
recordings that were done more than a half century
ago, as in the case of Jim Reeves, and make them
sound so fresh and "current" that you would swear
Jim just stepped into the recording studio today.
His voice is so alive and so clear, it proves
again that among singers he had no peers. Every
track brought a big surprise. I was already very
familiar with Jim's songs as originally released,
but these new versions are true masterpieces! They
bring a whole new dimension to his music, with
their up-to-date instrumental accompaniment that
makes us feel like Jim is still with us. A very
moving and sentimental and THRILLING time we had
listening to this superb CD!
Nobody

wow. How could this get any better? I
can't. Such pretty songs, sung by a
master, and all of it presented in new
arrangements that are FLAWLESS. There is
pretty strings and horns and guitars and
rhythm, all of it appropriate to the
song. From what I understand they
isolated Jim's voice and then added
totally new instrumentation. You would
never know that unless you were familiar
with the originals, because all this new
stuff fits so perfectly. Jim has a new
2018 CD out that sounds like it was all
done in 2018! And the duet with the
Norwegian singer has transformed an
original song that had a "talking steel
guitar" into a bonafide duet between two
lovers. Ms. Hollen sings so well, she's
a great compliment to Jim's baritone. A
fine choice. A fine CD. Highly
recommended!

To put it quite simply, this
release is in my humble opinion one of
the best I have heard for a long time.
I would be quite surprised if this
album doesn't go a long way in
introducing Jim to modern day
audiences , thus broadening his appeal
to new listeners who were not even
born when tragedy struck way back in
1964. Jim as per usual delivers each
rendition with such finesse it's hard
to fault it but in reality Jim was
deadly serious about his music and he
I believe was never satisfied he was
always striving to do better.
Consequently he was just as hard on
himself as he could be on others.
Larry has been obviously doing pretty
much the same as Jim was striving to
get it right as he can do and it does
show. Wouldn't be surprised if he like
Jim were burning the midnight oil in
crafting such a good album. Bearing in
mind that I'm one of those who has a
hearing loss in my right ear I do find
it hard to pick up everything that may
be there. But even I can appreciate
the work that both Jim and Larry have
put into this CD.
I would at least to listen to the sample tracks and then decide, something tells me that you may well be pleasantly surprised. I would like to say that there is, and sadly always will be naysayers on these releases. To consider this recording effort a "disappointment", is very strange to me. To refer to Ms. Hones vocals on the duet as "shrill", is totally off the mark. I don't know how they did it. Jim NEVER sounded better. His voice is flawless, and the tone and "presence" are beautiful that words cannot capture. I loved all the new "treatments," like the strings and guitar on "I Guess I'm Crazy," the very sophisticated new pop arrangement on "Just Out of Reach," the gorgeous strings on "I Love You Because" (which completes the song IMHO). "Don't Let Me Cross Over" takes on a whole new feel with the great band playing on the new overdub. "Carolina Moon" was one of my parents' favorite and it is featured with such a pretty new arrangement. I never realized before just how strong some of Jim's album material was. A case in point: "After Loving You", which should have been become a #1 hit single. "Stand In" is brilliant now. Oh -- one of my favorites was "There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder" which now has a rousing Latin rhythm and horns. BRILLIANT! You won't be disappointed. You've GOT to experience this great new CD! |
