Okay, we admit it. We just don’t get the b&w cover of this album. In real life, Cynthia is a vivacious redhead, besides being a sparkling personality, and the photo on this CD doesn’t convey that impression at all. (So we're running a small one on this page so you can see her). But aside from that drawback, this offering is nothing short of exquisite, musically speaking. She is like a delicate but beautiful flower.
For those of you who have never heard of Cynthia Clawson, she is best known for her work in the Contemporary Christian music field. But hers is a voice that transcends categorization. She’s been called the “Streisand of Christian Music.” A Grammy and multiple Dove award winner, Cynthia has recorded numerous albums, and this is one of our favorites.
You are going to be mesmerized by her gorgeous voice. We promise you that. Please be sure to play the medley sample below.
Lovers of Bill and Gloria Gaither's “Homecoming” TV series are very familiar with Ms. Clawson. Her sound of faith sprouted in Texas and blossomed into full flower, nurtured by the sounds of Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Cindy Walker and the old Broadman hymnal. But since Cynthia's mother studied music and was a fine church pianist, loving classical music, Ms. Clawson picked up those influences as well. While living in Nashville, she met Jim Ed Norman, who produced Anne Murray’s recordings. He encouraged Cynthia’s musical career.
There just isn't anybody who sounds quite like Cynthia. Her bell-clear and agile voice reaches for and hits difficult notes with precision, and seeing her sing in person one notices how her facial expressions and hand gestures also convey the emotions of the stories she tells in her songs.
Those who have seen this talented singer in concert with her superb accompanist Bruce Greer and wanted to take home that experience, this is the recording for you. But music lovers who have never heard Cynthia’s uplifting singing before are in for a special treat.
She is at her most inspiring as she offers comfort. The album “See Me, God,” is hopeful as it dares to ask questions and seek answers for those on a journey of spiritual growth. For example, she sings Tom Wait’s moving song, “Georgia Lee,” which ponders where God was when a little girl was murdered. Listen closely to the real-life story she tells. This is juxtaposed with Cynthia singing “Prayer For Peace” — words by St. Francis, music by Buryl Red.
On this album, Clawson has included her trademark hymns, interspersed throughout by offerings from composers like Stephen Sondheim. Just listen to her sing the standard “Nearer My God To Thee.” She’s accompanied by accordion and yet it sounds...well...normal. Her choices on the surface can seem odd but somehow Cynthia makes them work.
Pay special attention to Cynthia's paean to motherhood, “I Will Mother You” — a poignant song to which daughters as well as mothers will relate.
