Michael Buble has a special holiday gift for his naughty and nice fans. The multi Grammy Award winning Canadian artist presents “Michael Buble Christmas.” The singer commented that the season “has always been my favorite time of the year for me and my family so naturally it's been a dream of mine to make the ‘ultimate’ Christmas record.” Indeed he has. It ranks right up there with the best of them!
Recorded primarily at the Capitol Recording Studios in Hollywood and The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver, the album sounds fresh and as sparkling as an ornament on a Christmas tree, even though for the most part Michael just covers well-worn carols. Buble manages to pull off this achievement by virtue of his velvety voice, which he applies with exacting skill to every song he tackles. The arrangements are stellar, with the sort of big band and full orchestra backings one would typically hear on a Sinatra or Cole recording. This CD also features some duets with famous female divas.
Mr. Buble puts his own stamp on these classics. He re-works Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by slowing the tempo way down and turning the festive song into a very romantic and longing treatsie on desire and passion. It's one of the best Christmas songs written in the last 20 years!
Also quite amazing is Micahel's version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” He wisely sticks to Darlene Love's original arrangement though the brass and drums are recorded so well and the sound so bright, it might almost make you forget her original version was also fantastic. Buble modestly said that he might not have her pipes but he sure made up for it with his own punch and swagger.
A highlight of this CD is an original song written by Michael and his piano player, Alan Chang, called “Cold December night.” It's another romantic and well sung ballad that would go quite well with a hot toddy sitting by the fireplace. There are also spicy versions of “Holly Holly Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Frosty the Snowman,” (the latter two sung with the Puppini Sisterrs) as well as an awesome duet with Shania Twain on “White Christmas” that borrows a great deal from the Drifters version featured in the “Home Alone” movie. You likewise will enjoy Buble's duet with Thalia (“Mis Deseos / Feliz Navidad).
Michael sings a deeply moving version of “Ave Maria” where he really shows the richness and clarity of his amazingly beautiful diction and singing technique. Remember — this is a guy who closes out many of his concerts by putting the microphone down and singing the last song without amplification. “Silent Night” features a tender brass arrangement at the beginning that segues into a beautiful children’s choir that sings along with Michael so sweetly. Born in British Columbia in 1975 to a salmon fisherman, Buble was raised Catholic and dreamed of becoming a famous singer since he was only two. When he was a teen he slept with his Bible and prayed to become a singer. He also had ambitions to become an ice hockey player but was no good at it. Michael entered talent contets, plus sang at conventions, on cruise ships, malls, hotel lounges, bars, and even delivered singing telegrams. In 1997 he became a regular guest on a Canadian TV show. He self-financed an album and got a break when an aide to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney tapped him to sing at the wedding of Mulroney's daughter. Buble moved to America and launched his recording career in 2003. For anyone who thinks this generation lacks singers who can actually sing, take a listen to Michael Buble. He will prove otherwise, albeit he's the exception to the rule.
