This terrific album has Vic Damone singing brilliantly with splendid musical arrangements; this is a “must have” for any Damone fan, as he is in excellent form throughout and the sound quality is first-rate. Even the artwork is nicely done.

“Vic Damone: I'm Glad There Is You” begins with Damone doing justice to “An Affair To Remember” with the great Percy Faith and His Orchestra. Vic's rich baritone voice works wonders for this ballad. “Wait Til You See Her” is very pretty; Vic gives this a most sensitive treatment and the percussion enhances the beauty of the number.

“Just Say I Love Her” is simply charming. Vic sings this flawlessly in both Italian and English!

“The Things We Did Last Summer” is classic easy listening music that is very relaxing. Play it on your car stereo when you're stuck in traffic! Vic never lets go of a superfluous note. He also handles complex tempo and key changes with panache. “How Deep Is the Ocean” is romantic and the music fits in perfectly with Mr. Damone's style. In addition, “We Kiss In A Shadow” (from “The King And I”) shines brighter than silver and gold when Vic delivers it faultlessly; he sings this straight from the heart and just one listen proves it.

We love Nat King Cole's sensuous version of “Non Dimenticar” and never thought anyone could match his performance until we heard the Damone treatment. The string accompaniment is beautiful and the backup chorus sounds good as well.

“I‘m Glad There Is You” is another treat for the ears and “Life Does A Man A Favor” once again pairs Vic with Percy Faith, though Damone remains squarely in the spotlight; he is never upstaged by the accompanimenet. The album ends with a sublime rendition of “Gigi” from the movie of the same name. You'll want to play it over and over again.

Born Vito Rocco Farinola in 1928, his father was an electrician and his mother taught piano. Inspired by his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra, Damone began taking voice lessons. When his dad was injured at work, Vic had to drop out of high school. He worked as an usher and elevator operator in the Paramount Theater in Manhattan. During this time he met Perry Como and stopped the elevator between floors to sing for him. Impressed, Perry referred him to a local bandleader. This led to his entering the talent contest on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, which he won in 1947. He subsequently became a regular on Godfrey's radio show. He met comedian Milton Berle at the studio and Berle got him work at two night clubs. Ultimately Vic signed with Mercury Records and his first release, “I Have But One Heart,” reached #7 on the Billbaord chart.

Over the years Vic Damone has had a very successful career in recordings, TV and even a couple of movies. He has been less successful at marriage, being married five times and divorced four, and at one time was wed to Diahann Carroll. In 1997, Damone received the “Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Frank Sinatra said that Damone had “the best set of pipes in the business.”

This CD is an exemplary demonstration of Vic Damone's way with a song...
