One of the most popular and beloved holiday albums of all time, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” is now available for the first time on collectible NEW green vinyl! The music is performed ably by the Vince Guaraldi Trio with various children’s voices, and is from the soundtrack of the animated children’s classic that has aired for years on television and is based on the long-popular comic strip by Charles Schultz. “Charlie Brown” is the protagonist character who, like Schultz, is the son of a barber. But whereas the cartoonist was described in real life as the “most shining example of the American success story,” Brown is an example of “the great American UN-success story” in that he fails in almost everything he does.
Charlie Brown is a “lovable loser,” a perenially eight-year-old child possessed of endless determination and hope, but who is ultimately dominated by his insecurities. He first appeared in 1947, three years before the “Peanuts” comic strip started appearing in U.S. newspapers. He is one of the most well known characters in “Peanuts” and is considered to be the main figure in the strip. Charlie is always referred to by his full name (with the exception of Peppermint Patty, who calls him “Chuck,” and Marcie who calls him “Charles.”) His usual catchphrase is “good grief!’
Despite the frequent abuse and belittling at the hands of other kids, Charlie Brown has many friends from school and on his baseball team. His best friend, however, is Linus van Pelt — the younger brother of Lucy. (Linus invariably carries around a security blanket). Linus, though young, is wise beyond his years, and acts as the comic strip’s philosopher and theologian, often quoting the Gospels. He invented his own legendary being, the Great Pumpkin, who, Linus claims, appears every Halloween at the most “sincere” pumpkin patch, bearing gifts.
Charlie Brown’s pet dog is named Snoopy and he is perhaps the strip’s most dynamic character. The drawings of Snoopy were “greatly patterned” after Spike, one of creator Schultz’s childhood dogs. Though Snoopy doesn’t talk, his thoughts appeared to readers in “thought balloons.” In the animated “Peanuts” films and television specials, his moods are conveyed through growls, sobs, laughs and monosyllabic utterances as well as through pantomime. Unlike a regular dog, other characters treat him intelligently by taking directions from him, incorporating him into the local basement team, and so on.
The “Charlie Brown Christmas” cartoon debuted in 1965 and has aired annually ever since. Also telecast are other seasonal specials based on Brown at Halloween and Thanksgiving. The special was honored with both an Emmy and Peabody Award. The story touches on the over-commercialization and secularism of Christmas, and serves to remind viewers of the true meaning of the holiday. On their way to join the rest of the Peanuts gang all skating on a frozen pond, Charlie Brown confides in Linus that even though Christmas is approaching he still feels depressed, despite all the presents, cards and tree decorating. His depression only gets exacerbated by the goings-on in the neighborhood. Friend Lucy advises he get more involved, and invites him to direct a school Nativity play. Meanwhile, Snoopy is busy decorating his dog house with holiday lights. Lucy directs Charlie Brown to get a “big, shiny aluminum tree” for the play, but he picks out a scrawny little tree instead, that everyone laughs at. When Charlie begins to wonder if he really knows what Christmas is all about, Linus recites the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke. Soon the children begin to realize they were a little tough on Charlie Brown and they follow him home to help decorate his little tree as a surprise. They then start humming “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” The beautiful music from this cartoon classic will bring you waves of nostalgia when you listen to this nicelt remastered, collectible vinyl LP.
